Eczema! What is it? Some resources for you too.

This week on my Facebook page I am focussing on "Eczema".  For sufferers of this awful skin condition), you will be all too familiar with the scratching, oozing, sleepless nights that come with eczema and all that it involves. For those lucky enough to not have experienced eczema, here's a bit of information for you that may help you sympathise.

Eczema is a common skin condition affecting approximately 20% of Australian children and 10% of Australian adults. Symptoms include: inflammation of the skin, redness, itchiness, edema, oozing, crusting, scaling and vesicles (blisters). Eczema can be effectively treated but there is currently no cure. Although through taking a wholistic approach including diet modifications, sufferers can see dramatic improvements.

Infantile Eczema
Usually starts 4-6 months of age. Symptoms include a red rash appearing on the cheeks. This may then spread to the forehead, back of arms and legs.  Heavy scaling that resembles cradle cap may appear which can, in severe cases, spread to the entire body.
Infantile eczema usually disappears 3-5 years of age.

Childhood Eczema
Eczema in children usually starts between the ages of 2-4 years of age. Usually found in the creases of elbows, behind the knees, across the ankles. Eczema can also be found on the face, ears and neck. Usually disappears by the age of 10.

Adult Eczema
Presents itself in large areas of very itchy, reddened and weeping skin. The typical areas of behind the knees, in the folds of elbows, wrists, neck and ankles being affected.
Symptoms generally improve during middle age and are unusual in the elderly.
